Six Pound Overwieght Bag Fetches $150 Fee On United Airlines

You know I cannot figure out for the life of me the airline industry and
what is has become. I am on a business trip to the UK, actually in the
air heading back as I type. Recently on our trip over, one pf my
business peers checked in to his flight in Philly. Now mind you we are
frequent travelers and for some reason loyal to usually to one airline.
It is quite a scam, these mileage systems. We continue to get shitty
service yet in some physiological ploy we get caught up in this mileage
point buildup race which in the end gets us virtually no where, minus a
business upgrade here and there. That is IF you bought the right class
economy ticket.

In any case, I digress. My issue this time is about my friends check in
in the Philly airport. Apparently his bag was over wieght by 6 pounds,
yes 6 pounds ! In any case let me tell you what that 6 pounds cost in a
penalty charge …. wait for it … $150 ! They asked if he wanted to
take out 6 pounds …. however he had no other bags to place this said 6
pounds so he declined and paid the $150 fee. Now what I cannot figure
out is how it makes a difference to the loading of the plane if that 6
pounds is in one bag or two. I get that they are working to protect
their lower backs of their employees and their insurance rates for the
plane loaders but $150 for 6 pounds ?

Isnt it bad enough that we have to pay for checked bags in the first place ? And to add insult to injury we have to wiegh them on our batroom scale now to make sure we don’t incur the wrath of the pentalty goons ?

Food for thought
